Sacrament Series:

Anointing of the Sick…Who gets it? What do you think of when you hear Anointing of the Sick? Like many, you may think of a priest praying with someone in a hospital or sick in bed. For an increasing number of Catholics, however, the image would be different. Today, Anointing may take place during Sunday Mass with people, some visibly ill, others healthy looking, coming up the aisle to be anointed. While Anointing of the Sick began as a healing ritual, over the years, the emphasis has changed to forgiveness and, in some cases, final preparation for heaven. The Second Vatican Council returned the original meaning to the sacrament by emphasizing that it is not only for those who are at the point of death, but for anyone who is seriously ill, including mental or spiritual illness. It also helped move the Anointing away from a private service and back toward a community-based one.

LENT:

     Rules for fasting & abstinence:

Fasting:  Catholics 18 and not yet 60 are asked to observe the two fast days of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Abstinence:  All Catholics over the age of fourteen are required to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. The norms for abstaining from meat:  substituting fruits, dairy products or sea foods instead of meat for your meals. The Church still maintains all Fridays of the year as days of abstinence from meat; however, the faithful are permitted to substitute an alternative penance if they so desire on Fridays outside of the Lenten Season.

Almsgiving involves the notion of giving above and beyond what is normally given as an offering as a sign of doing penance.  For example, the money saved from fasting and abstaining from meat could be given in special collections that are taken up during Lent.  Realizing how wonderfully blessed we are may be an encouragement to offer a greater share during this special time of  penance.

SANCTIFYING GRACE - GOOD HABITS – VIRTUES:  Theological and Human:  The Most Holy Trinity gives the baptized sanctifying grace, the grace of justification.  This sanctifying grace enables the baptized to believe in God, to hope in Him, and to love Him through the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity.  This grace also gives the baptized the power to live and act under the prompting of the Holy Spirit through the gifts of the Holy Spirit:  Wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and a reverent fear of the Lord.  As well, this sanctifying grace is a free gift of God which allows us to become children of God, to share in the divine nature, and to inherit eternal life; it allows the baptized to grow in goodness through the moral virtues by doing what is right and just and avoiding what is wrong and evil.  (Cf:  Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1266).

The theological virtues dispose Christians to live in a relationship with the Holy Trinity.  They have God for their origin, their motive, and their object – God known by faith.  God hoped in and loved for his own sake.  There are three theological virtues:  faith, hope and charity.  They inform all the moral virtues and give life to them.  (Catechism of the Catholic Church, nos 1840-1841).

Human virtues acquired by education, by deliberate acts and by a perseverance ever-renewed in repeated efforts are purified and elevated by divine grace.  With God’s help they forge character and give facility in the practice of the good.  (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1810).

Four  virtues play a pivotal role and accordingly are called “cardinal” (from the Latin word for “hinge”); all the other virtues are grouped around them.  They are prudence (knowing when to speak and act, and when not to); justice (giving to each what is rightfully due them); fortitude (having the strength to act according to one’s convictions according to the will of God); and temperance (living and consuming/using temporal goods in moderation).  (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1831).
